Big Bend Country
Big Bend Country is named after the “bend” of the Rio Grande River, and the waterscapes draw kayakers seeking thrilling rapids and beautiful canyons. The region includes a diverse landscape, with plateaus, deserts, short grasses and brush, and the only mountains in Texas. Plants and animals must weather extreme temperatures, and soils vary widely with the diverse ecology of the region, but are generally very alkaline. Common crops include alfalfa, tomatoes, cotton and pecans. Prickly pear cactus are common here both in the wild and on farms, and they include edible fruit. You’ll also see iconic mesquite and acacia trees dotting the dramatic landscape.
