Starting your own backyard chickens class + woodland hike

Flower Mound, Texas 75028

Escape from the concrete-covered metroplex and learn homesteading skills on a 3-acre farm in the heart of Flower Mound, Texas.  The owners of this agrarian oasis care for a herd of 20 goats and a flock of chickens of several breeds, helped by two large but calm and friendly dogs.

This one-hour class is designed to assist those curious about or actively seeking starter skills on raising backyard chickens and to answer your questions.

Share the owner’s experiences raising chickens, hear her tips on what works best with our Texas climate challenges, and see her flock and coops.  Learn why grass-fed is preferable to grain only feeding and why a rooster is not necessary for egg production. Depending on current conditions, you may also be able to gather eggs.

This event concludes with a short, easy hike led by your host, along a trail to a wildflower meadow, through a lovely wooded area, and finishing at a creek nestled in the woods.  You will be accompanied on your hike by the dogs and a few friendly and entertaining goats who scamper along with you and scramble to be the first to climb rocks along the way.  You can even see some lovely geodes found on the property.

Texas Monarch Farm tours began during COVID lockdown when the farm owner’s children suggested their teachers and classmates would enjoy an opportunity to meet outdoors.  It was such a success that friends and their families heard about it and wanted to come too, so farm tours were born.  This workshop was formed to address visitors questions about raising backyard chickens.

All ages welcome; children must be accompanied by a supervising adult. No ticket necessary for babies age 0-2.

Because our farms are small businesses who block their schedules and make significant preparations for hosting, no refunds are available for visitors who cannot attend. Should the farm cancel the event due to inclement weather or other, refunds or reschedules will be offered.
