Learn how to make yogurt, kefir, and butter at home in this hands-on dairy workshop in Bowie on Sunday, December 1. Rancher Megan LaPointe has been one of DFW’s most popular market vendors and is a master cheesemaker, and she is known for her regenerative methods and high-quality meat, dairy and eggs.
There are only 6 spots available in this three-hour workshop, which will touch on a variety of homemade dairy products, and include samples for you to try. You can also add on a kit to get started making yogurt, kefir, and butter at home.
Seats tend to fill quickly. The class uses raw milk from the farm’s cows, as sold from point of production under Texas law.
This hands-on experience is for ages 12 and up and ideal for aspiring homesteaders and adventuresome foodies seeking the story and process behind local food. It is also appropriate for families looking to make memories together, farmers learning about small-scale production, or anyone curious about the people and animals who make your favorite diary.
You’ll review two approaches to making yogurt, including continual culturing and beginning with a new starter, and discuss the pros and cons of each.
You’ll also learn more about kefir, a fermented drink made with milk and kefir grains, and talk about the history and use of kefir. Then Megan will walk you through the process of making this probiotic powerhouse.
Finally, Megan will teach you how to turn heavy cream into rich, delicious butter right in your own kitchen.
She’ll share tips from her decades of experience with each recipe, and discuss food safety, and how to source milk for your own use.
The three-hour experience starts at 2 pm with an overview of dairy and the required equipment and supplies. Participants will then walk through the go through a step by step process of making the dairy products by hand from scratch. By the end of the class you will have farm fresh yogurt, kefir, and butter, with opportunities for hands-on work by the class.
The class aims to prepare you to make dairy at your home, so bring a notebook and take notes as the class proceeds.
After the class, you will have a chance to meet the dairy animals in person and hear more about their lives on the farm. Come prepared for outdoor weather and walking if you wish to join this portion of the class.
