Learn how to garden and see Dallas local history firsthand through this unique farm tour of Joppy Momma’s Farm, located in one of the last Freedman towns of Texas.
Joppy Momma’s is a community farm & garden located in the historic town of Joppa (sometimes spelled “Joppee”) six miles south of downtown Dallas. Joppa was founded by an emancipated slave (a Freedman town) and settled by many from the nearby Miller plantation and from others as far away as Missouri. Through its dynamic history, Joppa has struggled with marginalization, and has been federally declared a food desert. Joppy Momma’s Farm vows to change that by providing healthy, affordable foods for the community. Their activities aim to empower, educate, and create greater opportunities for health, wellness, and self-sufficiency through sustainable, regenerative agriculture.
Joppy Momma staff will walk you through local history both on the farm and through the nearby wetlands trail, the current challenges of the community, and show you how the farm is growing community in Joppa. You can learn about their farm operations, honey production, composting and more.
This tour is for all ages and runs between 1 and 1.5 hours depending on group interaction. Children 2 and under are free, and parents and guardians are responsible to closely supervise all children 12 and under.
Tour is for groups from 5-30 people, though larger groups may be accommodated with discussion and planning. Groups of fewer than 5 people will have the option to pay 5-person minimum or reschedule.
