See How the Farm Supports Community
Opal’s Farm in Fort Worth is dedicated to providing farm-fresh, nutritious food in the neighborhood that has been federally declared a food desert. Your support of the farm also helps improve the quality of life for local residents.
“Everyone deserves to be fed and to eat healthy food. Unfortunately, that’s rarely the case in many of our neighborhoods,” says farm manager Greg Joel. “A lot of people don’t know what it is to have fresh vegetables. The only choice they have is the convenience or dollar store down the street, and that’s usually a small selection of highly processed junk food void of nutrients. We will provide healthy options and the education to use them.”
Escape the City to a Riverbed Retreat
Escape the city hustle and bustle down in the riverbanks with this 1.5 hour tour. The five-acre urban farm east of Fort Worth downtown resides on land owned by the Tarrant Regional Water District, and is on rich, fertile bottom land near the river. You may even spot some local wildlife that frequent the riverbanks.
See first-hand how the farm uses its unique geography and organic agriculture methods to meet neighborhood needs.
Learn About Farming and Organic Gardening
The tour discusses the farm’s history, techniques they use to maximize production, future plans for the farm and how it gives back to the local community.
You’ll learn organic methods you can apply in your own garden to maximize yields, ensure soil conservation and practice environmentally friendly farming. You can also ask questions to these professional farmers about growing in the Texas climate, and pick up tips for how to better grow your own food.

Unity Unlimited, the nonprofit behind Opal’s arm also seeks to create jobs, provide training, and bring a spirit of entrepreneurship and self-reliance back to the local community. In particular, it works with incarcerated youth to offer them a chance to re-enter society. Opal’s Farm is also creating community plots that can be leased to those interested in ongoing participation and education.
