What to Know Before You Visit a Farm: Tips for a Great Family Experience

Visiting Farms

There’s nothing like a day on the farm. Kids light up when they meet a goat up close or pull a carrot from the dirt. Families slow down. Curiosity grows. And everyone learns something new.

But if you’ve never visited a working farm before—or even if you have—it helps to know a few things ahead of time. At Delve Experiences, we work with farms across Texas to create fun, accessible experiences for families, schools, and community groups. Here’s what we recommend keeping in mind before your next visit.

👟 Dress for the Dirt

Farms are beautiful, but they’re also functional. That means:

  1. Long pants are your friend—protection from bugs, brush, or sun
  2. Closed-toed shoes are a must (for safety and comfort)
  3. Clothes that can get dusty or muddy are best
  4. Be prepared for the weather—bring hats, sunscreen, jackets or coats, or sunglasses depending on the season

🧃 Snacks, Water, and What Not to Bring

While some farms offer refreshments, it's a good idea to bring your own water bottles—especially in the Texas heat. Small snacks for little ones can help keep the mood cheerful, but unless you're sure they’re welcome during the tour, it's smart to leave them in the car. Curious animals (especially goats and farm dogs) are very good at finding tasty smells, and we want everyone to stay safe and focused.

And speaking of animals: please don’t bring your pets. Even friendly dogs can cause stress or conflict with livestock, farm dogs, or other guests. Whether it’s a puppy or a pet turtle, it’s best for all involved to leave animals at home.

🚽 Know the Farm Isn’t a Park

Some farms have bathrooms. Some don’t. Some paths are stroller-friendly, and others might be rough or uneven. At Delve, we try to clarify these things in our listings wherever possible—but if you’re unsure, feel free to ask!

Farms aren’t designed for visitors—they’re designed for purpose. They’re places where food is grown, animals are cared for, and daily work is done. When you visit, you’re stepping into a real, working space—not a theme park. And that’s part of what makes it so special. You’re getting a glimpse behind the scenes of something meaningful and alive.

  1. Baby carriers are a great option if you're not sure about stroller access
  2. Wheelchair or mobility concerns? Just reach out—we’re happy to help you find the right fit

🌧 What Happens in Bad Weather?

If weather is a concern, we’ll notify you by email as soon as we have updates. Each farm makes the final decision about whether to hold or cancel an event, and you can always reach out via chat or email to check the status.

  1. If the farm cancels, you’ll be offered a reschedule or refund
  2. If the event goes on but you’re unable to attendwe can’t offer refunds, but you're welcome to request a reschedule—and we’ll do our best to accommodate when possible

🌱 Our Role at Delve: Clear, Friendly, Reliable

At Delve, we work with farms to provide accurate listings, helpful prep info, and a booking experience that feels easy—not overwhelming. Whether it’s a one-time weekend tour or a field trip for 30 homeschoolers, we want you to know what to expect.

  1. We do our best to share what’s included, how much walking is involved, and what kind of setting you’ll be in
  2. We pass along real visitor feedback to help farms improve and evolve
  3. We always welcome your input—we’ll send a quick follow-up after your visit to ask how it went
  4. And one more tip: be sure to read the listing and any reminder emails carefully. Our farm partners work hard to prepare for your visit, and the details—like parking, what to wear, or how to interact with animals—can make a big difference in how smooth and enjoyable your day is.
