🌱 A Legacy of Purpose and Planting Seeds of Change 🚜
Nestled in the heart of Fort Worth along the Trinity River, Opal’s Farm is more than just an urban garden—it’s a powerful blend of community, social justice, and agricultural education. Co-founded by retired teacher and nationally celebrated Juneteenth activist Opal Lee, and farm‑managed by Gregory Joel, this remarkable space connects Fort Worth neighborhoods to fresh food, farm know‑how, and meaningful opportunity.
Opal’s Farm was created as part of Unity Unlimited, the nonprofit organization behind many of the Juneteenth celebrations in Texas. When Fort Worth icon Opal Lee helped turn advocacy into action, she did more than fight for a federal holiday—she helped reclaim riverfront land to grow real food, build green jobs, and feed a neighborhood long underserved.
"We’re not just farming. We’re changing the future of Fort Worth—one harvest at a time.” – Gregory Joel, Farm Manager
With support from local partners, the Tarrant Regional Water District, and Unity Unlimited, Opal’s Farm has become a living classroom and a model for how urban agriculture can repair communities.
Growing with Purpose: From Seedlings to Social Impact
Since its first planting in 2019, the farm has steadily scaled up:
- Growing thousands of pounds of organic produce each year
- Serving both upscale restaurants and underserved neighbors
- Creating workforce training opportunities, including for people formerly incarcerated
- Offering education programs for students, apprentices, and the public
It’s not just about food. It’s about justice, healing, and regeneration.
